Asteri
is a tiny, sleepy village above the bay of
Rethymnon
on the Mediterranean island of
Crete.
It is located some 1,500 meters south of the bigger village of
Stavromenos
and 500 meters south of the neighbouring village of Hamalevri, so it is 2 kms south of the north coast, on the east flank of a rather flat ravine.

On the coast, this ravine makes the border between Stavromenos and the neighbouring village of
Sfakaki.
There is also the nearest exit of the New National Road.
In wintertime, a creek is running along the ravine, and with heavy rain it can rise to a rapid river.
In summertime it however runs dry.

From Asteri and the ravine's east flank, there are beautiful sea views almost everywhere, and the closer surroundings are very scenic as well.
Therefore several old houses in the village have been changed to holiday villas during recent years, and modern houses have been built aside the village in traditional style, some of them being rented by the week as well.

A restaurant is the village's only business enterprise.
A big number of shops is however located in Stavromenos:
There are 3 supermarkets, 2 butcher's shops, a bakery, 2 tavernas, a grill stand, a pharmacy, a ladies' hairdresser and barber, a photo shop, an internet cafe, a gas station, and many others.
